Your new centre’s name

In consultation with local Traditional Owners, Early Learning Victoria Bani Walup (pronounced bar-ne wal-up) has been chosen as the name of the new early learning and childcare centre at Murtoa College. Bani Walup is a Wergaia word meaning little blue tongue lizard.

During the planning, design, and construction phases, the centre was known by its interim name, Murtoa College Early Learning and Childcare Centre.

About the centre

We have opened a new early learning and childcare centre at Murtoa College.

It’s run by Early Learning Victoria, a Victorian Government organisation. We offer long day care, sessional kinder, and integrated kinder for 57 children each day. With 3 rooms built for different ages and designed for learning and play, your child will thrive here.

The centre also has a consulting room for child and family services, such as maternal and child health and allied health.

Does your organisation need a place to run programs? Express your interest in using a room.

Programs

We offer high-quality childcare and kinder in Murtoa:

  • Long day care (childcare): 57 places for children aged 0-6.
  • Integrated kinder: Kinder plus long day care, offering flexible drop-off and pick-up within an 11-hour day.
  • Sessional kinder: Only attending kinder hours and days, school terms only.
  • Pre-Prep: Four-Year-Old Kindergarten has become Pre-Prep. This means more funded hours of kinder each week (between 16 and 30 hours). Murtoa is one of the first places in the state to introduce Pre-Prep from 2025. This new program gives 4-year-old children greater opportunities to socialise and learn through play.
  • At least one qualified early childhood teacher in each kinder room, providing a high-quality kinder program.

Kinder hours are:

  • Three-Year-Old Kindergarten: 8:45 am - 3:15 pm. Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays.
  • Pre-Prep 8:45 am - 3:15 pm, Monday to Thursday.

Free Kinder

Free Kinder funding helps families pay for kinder. It covers:

  • 3-year-olds: 5 to 15 hours per week
  • 4-year-olds (Pre-Prep): up to 30 hours per week

Free Kinder is available at both:

  • Standalone (sessional) kinder programs: You don’t pay anything. Funding goes directly to the service and your child gets a free program.
  • Long day care with integrated kinder programs You get an annual offset, which is deducted from your fortnightly invoice.

How integrated kinder works with Free Kinder

We run an integrated kinder program from Monday to Thursday. The program is led by a qualified early childhood teacher. Children learn through planned activities and experiences throughout the day.

All 3- and 4-year-olds at our centre on those days take part in the kinder program, even if they’re only enrolled in long day care. No matter when your child attends, they’ll benefit from high-quality learning experiences.

Save money with Free Kinder

If your child is in our kinder program, you get an offset on your fees:

- save up to $2,101 for 3-year-olds
- save up to $3,641 for 4-year-olds

If your child attends 2 or more days a week for the full year, you will get the full offset amount. If your child attends less than 15 hours a week, the offset will be adjusted based on their enrolled hours. The less time they attend, the lower the discount.

To receive the Free Kinder offset at our centre, you must formally enrol in our kinder program. You can only claim Free Kinder at one service at a time. When you enrol, we’ll give you a form to sign to confirm this.

How sessional kinder works with Free Kinder

If you enrol your child in Pre-Prep at our centre, they will only attend during kinder program hours.

In this case, the Free Kinder funding covers the whole cost, so you won’t have to pay anything.

If your child is enrolled in Free Kinder at another service

You can enrol your child in Free Kinder at another service and use our long day care on the other days. Your child will still take part in the integrated kinder program at our centre. However, you will not receive a Free Kinder fee offset if they are formally enrolled in the kinder program at the other service.

Children often learn and settle best when they go to the same kinder program every week. At our centre, qualified teachers plan and run a program that suits your child’s needs and helps them grow, learn and get ready for school.

Ratios

All our centres comply with national standards for educator-to-child ratios:

  • For babies and children under 3 years old, this means 1 educator for every 4 children.
  • For children aged 3 years and above, this means 1 educator for every 11 children.
